Past 15, the default flips toward replacement, because even a successful repair is propping up a system that's statistically near the end. The in-between years — 10 to 14 — are where the specific failure and the home matter most.
The part that failed tells you a lot
Not all failures are equal. A capacitor, a contactor, a blower motor, a thermostat — these are ordinary, affordable repairs, and on a sound system they're a clear yes. A failed compressor or a leaking evaporator coil is a different conversation entirely: those are the most expensive components in the system, and when one goes on an older unit, you're often paying a large fraction of a replacement to keep an aging machine limping. The refrigerant matters too — if your system still runs on R-22, that refrigerant has been phased out, so any repair that requires a recharge is getting more expensive and harder to source every year.
